Mahakal Darshan Booking
One of the 12 Jyotirlingas in India, dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and is located in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, India. It is one of the most revered pilgrimage sites for Hindus. The temple is known for its unique "Bhasma Aarti", a ritual where sacred ash (bhasma) is offered to Lord Shiva in the early morning hours.

Significance of Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga

Self-Manifested Lingam: Unlike other Jyotirlingas, Mahakaleshwar is believed to be Swayambhu (self-manifested), meaning it appeared on its own.
Facing South (Dakshinamukhi): It is the only Jyotirlinga where the Shiva Lingam faces south, which is associated with the power of Lord Shiva as the ultimate time controller (Mahakal).
Bhasma Aarti: The temple's morning aarti involves offering sacred ash to the deity, a unique tradition that attracts thousands of devotees.

Temple Structure

The Mahakaleshwar temple complex has several levels:
Garbhagriha (Sanctum Sanctorum) – Houses the Jyotirlinga.
Omkareshwar Lingam – Present in the middle level.
Nagchandreshwar Temple – Located on the top floor, opens only on Nag Panchami.

Legends Associated with Mahakaleshwar

According to Hindu mythology, a demon named Dushana terrorized Ujjain, and the local people prayed to Lord Shiva for protection. Lord Shiva emerged as Mahakal and defeated the demon. On the request of devotees, Shiva decided to reside in Ujjain in the form of a Jyotirlinga.
