Vedh Shala, also known as Jantar Mantar of Ujjain, is an ancient astronomical observatory built in the 18th century by Maharaja Jai Singh II. It is one of the five observatories established by the king, with others located in Delhi, Jaipur, Varanasi, and Mathura. Located on the Tropic of Cancer, Vedh Shala was used for astronomical studies, time calculation, and planetary observations.
Oldest Observatory in India: Built in 1725, it is one of the oldest functional observatories in the country. Precise Time & Calendar Calculations: Instruments here were used to determine local time, planetary positions, eclipses, and zodiac movements. Connection with Ujjain’s Timekeeping: Ujjain was considered the Greenwich of India, as it was a major center for Hindu time calculation.
